I'll be back in Adelaide from Friday to Monday this coming weekend. I'll be coaching during the days on Friday through to Sunday, but Saturday and Sunday nights are free. If anyone is free and would like to catch up for a drink, drop me a line!

Ready to Rumble

Posted by Tim Riley Fri, 07 Sep 2007 08:36:00 GMT

This weekend, Hugh and I will spend 48 hours building a new web app as part of the Rails Rumble. We're going to build something that I have personally wanted to use for a long time. It should be a lot of fun!

We may be looking for some beta testers, so feel free to register your interest here. Anyway, watch this space, I will keep you all posted throughout the event!

Life in Canberra

Posted by Tim Riley Thu, 02 Aug 2007 12:29:00 GMT

It's about time that I update you all on what has been going on lately. At the start of July, I moved to Canberra from Adelaide in order to be closer to my girl, and life since then continues to be as challenging and rewarding as ever.

Things with work have not changed -- I'm still fighting the good fight with the rest of the NetFox crew. In the last few weeks, we've delivered a number of handy improvements to the product (see our blog for info), and we have a long list of enhancements that we will be releasing regularly over the months to come. I feel like we really have begun to hit our straps in terms of getting product improvements written, integrated, tested and released in good time.

I have continued to play volleyball after moving here. I'm playing with the ANU Volleyball Club in the ACT State League. I'm setting for the team, as I was in Adelaide. After a couple of rusty games adapting to the different style of play and getting used to the super cold playing environment, I have found my feet again. The league plays on Wednesday nights here, and last night the team had its first win since I joined. I'm looking forward to playing with the team into the finals.

I've been getting out and about quite a lot in this new city, thanks to Misch's active and welcoming group of friends. In the last month I have enjoyed a couple of benders out on the town (who said Canberra was dead?), a volleyball club quiz night, and lots of gourmet pizza and movies. Tomorrow night I am looking forward to going to the annual law students society Ball at Parliament House!

Finally, since I have come here, I have been reenergised to work more on personal web projects. To start with, I am working on my blog, giving it a new design that incorporates all the microformats and possibly looking at implementing OpenID logins for SimpleLog.

To anyone who has told me otherwise

From the Australian Road Rules (Part 9, Section 118):

Giving a left change of direction signal when leaving a roundabout

(1) If practicable, a driver driving in a roundabout must give a left change of direction signal when leaving the roundabout.

That’s it. Plain and simple: no conditions, no exceptions, you just have to do it.

NetFox at CeBIT!

Posted by Tim Riley Tue, 01 May 2007 06:08:00 GMT

I may be in Adelaide holding down the fort, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting that NetFox is exhibiting at CeBIT Australia this week! We’re at the rather snazzy looking “South Australia: A Brilliant Blend” stand in the Business Software section.

If you’re attending CeBIT, check us out and have a chat with Daniel and John, they’re a pair of smart, interesting and handsome guys.

Turning 500

Posted by Tim Riley Sun, 18 Feb 2007 11:25:00 GMT

So I’ve been neglecting this blog a bit lately, but I have been posting photos regularly to my flickr page. Tonight I posted my 500th photo!

Hopefully I will resume writing in here more frequently as well.

Volleyball in Melbourne

Posted by Tim Riley Sat, 02 Dec 2006 12:08:00 GMT

I’m in Melbourne this week coachying volleyball in my eighth Australian Volleyball Schools Cup. It’s shaping up to be another fun and exciting (and no doubt tiring!) week.

You can my team’s results on the web, and also look at the results for all of the Unley High teams.

The P in Productivity is for Pocky!

Posted by Tim Riley Sun, 02 Jul 2006 08:00:00 GMT

Pocky, uploaded by olivander.

During my essay writing this semester, I found a new study aid: Pocky! Although I once had this magic on a stick many years ago, I found it again while shopping in the asian supermarkets around Moonta St in Adelaide. It gives a sugar boost that is particularly useful to stimulate study, but I only hope that I don’t go too far.

There is no hope, however, for Morning Musume. This is a Japenese pop band that my friend Mikael recently introduced me to; all of their music is so bouncy and saccharine that it appears to have been written entirely on a pocky high. I really enjoy it; it is an energy boost in itself, but I think I might stick to ABC Classic FM when it comes to the essays.

Photos!

Posted by Tim Riley Sun, 04 Jun 2006 13:06:00 GMT

It has been a couple of weeks since I got back from my trip to China, but I finally have put all the photos online! I have a set for the photos from China and one for the photos from Singapore. Check them out! The trip was an amazing experience. I got to meet some fascinating people and my world perspective was certainly broadened. I am going to start some mandarin classes in a couple of months!

In other photography news, while I was in China I bought a new LG KG328 mobile phone, which is the first such device I have owned that includes a camera! So lately I have been happily snapping and flickr-ing my cameraphone shots as well. It is handy having a compact device that can take photos because it means you don’t have to miss out on capturing anything.

Finally, Archie and Jughead and all the gang have all been jumping on the web2.0 photosharing bandwagon lately. Take a captain: Vidar, Docpi, DD, Syngin and PB. And of course Marco will readily point out he was the first one of us all to get his flickr on.

Gone fishing...

Posted by Tim Riley Fri, 05 May 2006 16:31:00 GMT

...in the Yellow Sea. Back in 10 days.

Tomorrow morning I go to China! My old man and I will be visiting Baoding, Beijing, Taiyuan and Singapore. I may flickr up some photos and blog a bit depending on what time and connectivity are available. Otherwise, I see you all again in a week and a half! Woo!
